post-fest thoughts

it is the monday after the end of the festival and i feel great. i don’t think i expected to have such a terrific time or for it to be such an amazing experience. the people i hung out with, the variety of art on show, the thrill of performing outside (ahhh!), the incredible diverse pedestrians, and most of all, getting to know a few blocks of g street and make them our home for a few days…i sometimes feel like the word “community” is over-used, but i’m not sure how else to describe the vibe. it was just so positive and inclusive–to artists and street people alike.
i am still (and will be for a while!) catching up on sleep and life in general, but i want to make this a forum for comments and observations and images for those who might have something to say. send us your photos and/or videos and we’ll post them! and please comment below on whatever you have to say about the festival.a few questions that i’ll use as a prompt:
–how did the performances, or performing, change your sense of the sites?
–did audience interaction change the sense of who was performing?
–what were some of the most compelling moments for you–in performance? –overall?
–was dc affected somehow by our presence?
thanks to my lovely friends and fellow volunteers ilana and leslie who already commented, below, on the festival.
also, boris willis posted couple of videos that he shot of improv fest performances on his danceaday blog. here is one of fall girl, another of kelly mayfield’s rehearsal in front of the library, one of daniel burkholder’s performance, and one of a group of us in the evening, eating, while he danced outside the window (scroll down a little to view them all).
here’s a video shot by shallom, who works w/ kelly mayfield, of daniel burkholder’s piece from a very different perspective (again, scroll down).
also online here and here are a bunch of really great observations of festival performances by maria, a dc dance blogger in her own right and an observer.
and the washington post reviewed the festival in today’s paper!
i’ll add my own thoughts once i’ve caught my breath a little more.
