learning how to do what you do

if i want to know what good writing is, i can pick up a new yorker any day of the year and read something really, really well written.
if i want to understand and learn about good music, i can go to itunes, anytime.
good video work is all over tv, movies and the internet.
but good dance is hard to see. unless i really spend time looking for dance videos–where? on you tube?–there’s not that much to be found. and in terms of live performances, the real thing, i see perhaps two, three really inspiring dance pieces a year. if that.
no wonder it’s a hard art to get good at. learning how to do something comes from doing it, but also observing what works for others. and in dance, that’s in short supply.

I find lately that I get the most inspiration from good physical theater. There’s a wonderful play at Atlas called “Made in China” directed by Colin Hovde which goes through this weekend. The actors are awesome. Lately I find clarity of intention in theater that seems to me to be often lacking in dance.

I find it less in less in a theater setting and more observing everyday life, A.D.D children, a business man breaking out into Thai Chi on the street, dance offs in a club. Places where the pretentiousness isn’t there and people are moving with there own rhythm.

ilana, i totally agree…i’d forgotten that that was an idea i’d had as well. people are all around us, and even when they’re restratined, physically, they still convey something that we’re eternally taking in, even unconsciously. i’m still not 100% sure, though, how that winds up influencing my ideas and my movements, but it must, somehow.
