after adf 07
i just came across this wrapup article about the american dance festival; it’s by a dance critic from my area in north carolina whom i know. adf (based in durham, nc) isn’t necessarily all that important to or symbolic of the dance world (though the staff and founders would probably disagree!), but it’s still interesting to see what they came up with for this year’s slate of performances, and how the shows turned out.
this reviewer is pretty negative about the state of things–he points out the older age of most of the american companies that performed at adf and of the pieces they showed, and wonders if there are some newer u.s. companies that are being neglected. on the other hand, apparently all of the foreign companies that came to adf this year were very young, and their work was generally weak and erratic.

Speaking as a 2007 staff member, I have to agree with Byron. Usually he trashes ADF unjustly, but this I believe is fully justified. ADF is a relic museum. It’s a good ol’ boys club for dance. Many of the staff know that and resent it. Have you noticed how much turnover there has been in the staff in the last 2 years? Almost 100% but ADF has a history of that.

interesting…i’ve followed adf sporadically, but hadn’t realized there’d been so much staff turnover. but i can 100% see the old boys’ club thing. paul taylor, for example, seems to be there every single year. in a way it seems like something built into adf’s structure that keeps them from breaking out of that rigid pattern; the one summer i participated in the 6-week school, i was struck by how old fashioned it was, w/ overtones of the ballet world and all its conventions and competitions. at that time, i know the students all were interested in seeing newer and fresher work come to the festival, so it’s interesting to see that they still haven’t been able to succeed at that.
