So many people I talk to say the same thing about modern dance like its weird, people don’t understand it, audiences are getting smaller and yet we plod on as if by some miracle the people are going to have a catharsis and decide they like what we do. I feel like what we have done is irrelevant. Who is going to recognize that the world has changed with the revolution in technology. People are walking around with video players in their pockets watching tv shows and movies. At one point a choreographer could never have a tv show but that is no longer true. How many of us have a video series on iTunes when it is totally possible and incredibly easy. However it is not just the method of delivery that has to be recognized and capitalized upon but the content as well. How many choreographers are responding to the President, the war in Iraq and other issues that seem to be important. Are we afraid that the President is going to come and get us if we speak out against him with our art? Are we afraid that others won’t like us if we speak out for him? How can we put dance in the culture rather than expect the world to come to us.

boris’s comment is an interesting one that makes me think about what dance means to me. on the one hand, i think his is a really clear and valid point about remaining relevant to the world, rather than ignoring it, falling behind and then whining that no one’s interested in our work. i know there are a few choreographers who remain in tune and stimulated by new ideas in technology–like merce cunningham and his experiments with choreography software or ipods, or (closer to home) maida withers, who’s used youtube to show off local dance. but it’s true, those examples are few and far between, and perhaps that does make us increasingly irrelevant.
but, on the other hand, i know that what attracts me to modern dance is precisely that it can be so weird and out there, that it’s a way of letting oneself go into another place and perhaps let go of this reality for a while. and it’s a chance to try to capture something totally different. in all honesty, i’m not sure i’d be especially interested in dance if being relevant were a serious qualification. that’s not to disparage boris’s point, but just to expand the discussion a bit (if anyone’s still following this) and pose the question of what it means to be relevant to today’s era, and if that’s the only way to appeal to people.

1. modern/post-modern dance choreographers are no more weird than modern/post-modern painters or sculptures, but dancers have worst press agents and no “thing” that can be bought and sold.
2. There is a “vetting” process - those choreographers who always have to open their own checkbook to pay for their performances stop eventually (for the most part). Most dancers and choreographers get sucked up into their day jobs and they stop in their late 20s or mid 30s. If you meet someone in their 40s who is still dancing than they have figured something out.
3. I have no fucking idea what modern dance is anymore. Am I a modern dancer? or a post-modern dancer? I don’t think so - I’m not using Graham technique, nor am I trying to recreate the experiments of Judson Church. I’m more influenced by them than say, hip-hop or ballet - but I am not trying to do what they did. I’m not even doing “new” dance, nor straight improv dance. I dance and I don’t have a better label for it right now.
4. Relevance - I say do what interests you, passionately. But, then, you do have a responsibility to open yourself, your process, your art, to as many people as can come in. Talk with people, blog, use YouTube, perform everywhere, for anyone. Give and give again. And…how many people do you want to be relevant for?
