Our Birthday at the Atlas

In April last year, we started the Dinner Party, and on Thursday April 30th, as part of Dance Is The Answer, we held our Happy Birthday concert at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

To a trio that is used to producing the show at the Warehouse theater with volunteer staff functioning as sound technicians and sales people, it was quite interesting to have a full production team ready to help us with whatever we needed. Our reaction to this was to awkwardly look at each other and not really be able to think of anything we needed help with.

At one point I was nervous that the proscenium theater would not be a good fit for the works-in-progress that the show usually consists of. But it did work. Yeah, there was something free and vital to seeing pieces that were not specifically created to be performed in a proscenium theater being performed there. In some cases it even added an interesting disconnect, if I may say so.

All in all there was performance art happening on the stage that grabbed and pulled. Some pieces were more comfy, entertaining. But not all. Some did put that grip on you. The type of grip you don’t realize is there until it’s gone. To me, that is why I consume are in the first place. So that I can leave this place for a bit, take off into another place for a few. I think good art confirms life, and confirms you. Good art stops the pain for a brief moment.

Here are some clips from the evening: Star FK Radium, Jessica Wong and Chance Jackson, Mary Szegda, Aaron, Larry and Courtney, David Rabin and Sylvana Sandoz, Kelly Bond.

The next Dinner Party will be held at the Warehouse on the 26th, and! in June we’re taking a slightly differently curated version to Artomatic.

But who needs art when the sun is shining and weather is great and there’s ice cream to be had in the park? Whatever, let’s just do it anyway. A call for performers and new work will be sent out very soon.

The Dinner Party in February

So, we did it again. Manders put it together this time. The Dinner Party -a variety of in-progress and experimental dance, music and performance art pieces- took place again in the historic theater and my favorite spot, The Warehouse.

And, we had some pretty rad press in the Post on Sunday. I laughed hard seeing those physio balls on the cover of the Style section last Sunday though (only in the printed version unfortunately). — Mary Szegda’s piece from January’s Dinner Party, which included physio balls that she drew a smiley face on as props, must have made an impression on reporter Lavanya. Manders, Silver and I had taken pictures for the Post to publish along with the article. …We got beaten by rubber balls with a smiley face. Nice.

Fresh this last Tuesday was a spoken word piece by Jackson Nortyst. We’ve pretty much presented it all at this point, but we’d not had a spoken word piece yet (even though I claimed so in a press piece a few months ago) so it was nice to see a young lad simply and calmly read out of his diary. His stuff is ridiculous. An “enormous whitehead resembling a tablespoon of elmer’s glue”? Loves it.

Here are some clips from last Tuesday:

The Dinner Party

Tuesday night ended up being a good one. A few new people showed works, including Jane Jerardi and Mary Szegda. Over all I thought the evening had a nice balance.

Blogger Ellen wrote about the Dinner Party at Widening the I: “Sylvana Sandoz, a hip-hop dancer, closed the evening. Try to picture a cherub from a Botticelli painting dancing like Mr. Wiggles and you’ll have Sandoz. It was awesome, especially when she built in some slowness and suspense, which seemed a nice strong point of hers.”
–check out the entire post here. (See also the blog post about the Yellow House Obama cupcakes!)

I took some clips with an old camera. The quality is not great, but maybe you can get a sense..:
Chimiak, Gomez, Martin & Zook; Jane Jerardi and Roxann Morgan; Sarah Archer; Binahkaye Joy; Mary Szegda; Jackson Styron; Kim Bell and dancers; Mentalstopholes; Sylvana Sandoz

What else… Don’t miss the Inaugural Movements this weekend! And stay warm now.

So much beauty

Last night was ridiculous.

As usual, The Dinner Party presented a night of raw and untamed work from many different genres. And all I could think of, is that at this point, it’s all I need.

I don’t need the polished, I don’t need the packaged. I just want the intention and the drive. That’s what I crave.

This is precisely what I felt was presented last night. One of the pieces I truly enjoyed, Levitt’s piece, didn’t even have an end for Christ sake! It didn’t matter. The idea, the tone, the drive. — It was all there. Screw endings!

What else did the Dinner party bring to us this month… Oh yeah, a woman in tassles rubbing up against a corn cob(!)… The view I had of the audience was priceless. The woman closest to me looked down and seemed to mumble something to herself. I wonder what she said.

And artist couple Leslie and Eric who did a collaboration by mixing her dancing and his music into a weirdly cool illustration of places they had been, was quite a ride.Interesting as well, was that the evening debuted a choreography by someone who has not spent years in the dance studio, but rather the music studio. I love the fact that The Dinner Party became a platform for musician Lanou to present his first dance piece. In my opinion, Mr Lanou, is as much of a choreographer than Merce himself (who is God according to Lanou’s religious beliefs) as I do think that it’s choreographing that makes someone a choreographer and nothing else.

We also had that hot guy from the Artist Bloc come check us out, Colin. Need to check their next show out too.

The next Dinner Party is on January 13th, also at the Warehouse.

Thanks to Miss Silver for being the coolest producer in DC.

sly and johnslyarms

Thanks to Rebecca for the photos (not sure why they come up so small…)!

Lastly, an email came…

“Hey Ilana. So there are 14 people on the menu. I thought I was wait listed at number 13. There was never any effort on your part to contact me, or to tell me that there was an opening on the menu. I’m not sure why you would lie to me, or intentionally exclude me, but whatever the reason I no longer care. I’m tired. I’m sick and tired of trying to prove myself to people like you who wouldn’t know good dance and good experimental performance if it slapped you in the face. All this time we have been sending messages back and forth and you’ve been saying that you can’t wait to see my work, then you intentionally ignore me when I’ve made it clear that I’m interested in showing something and that I have something prepared. Meanwhile, you have crap on your menu like those belly dancers that made a disaster out of the art form during the November performance. Or the woman who spent 10 minutes getting her fricken hair cut and moaning. That was also complete crap trying to pass itself off as good art. Whatever. At this point, it would be an insult to be a part of your subpar show. Good luck. I can’t below how low this area has gotten when it comes to performance art, and how selfish and uncaring most of the people putting it on have become. You make me sick.”

Um… not sure what to say, other than that this is sort of WHY we do the dinner party — so a girl can have a hair cut while moaning on stage.

The Dinner Party and life and so

DC artists, it’s a beautiful morning, and we’re back. And not just back, but like, back back.

In the last few months we have all - me, Ilana and Amanda- been working of several projects. Some have intersected and some not.

Here are a few events coming up that involves all of us:

- The Dinner Party! Another evening of EXPERIMENTAL performance art is happening again at the Warehouse, this Tuesday at 8pm. (Rumor has it that one piece will be directed by notes from the audience. Weird!!)

- The Capital Inauguration Jam. This is how we will celebrate the beginning of a new era. By rubbing up against each other. Yay! I will post more info here shortly, but the date to save is Monday 19th.

What else… Oh on this Saturday Amanda is being transformed into ALICE from the wonderwonderland! I hear it’s an adult version….

Lastly, I came a cross a youtube that I am obsessed with. It’s of my idol David Dorfman playing accordion, here.

those brilliant Brit bits

i left for work at 8am on friday morning and didn’t get back home until 4am. i’m not sure how that happened, but i do know that i had a great time, especially during the earlier part of the evening, when me and Kicki joined Silverstein and her house mates for an improvised dinner party.

turns out that ilana’s new roommate, Daniel, is the boyfriend of the established choreographer and art director of “Green Bean Dance” in London, Katie Green.
chatting about UK dance companies made me think of some work by DV8 physical theatre that i haven’t seen in years. this led to a lengthy youtube session watching some of the just ridiculously amazing work they’ve produced.

DV8 is such an amazing company that does mind blowing work, but they also do such different work. just take a look at the first and second clip.

“Strange Fish”
Enter Achilles” (–GOTTA watch the transition from the beginning which is very theatrical to the end which is very physical. and if you’re gonna cheat, watch from around 3 minutes and on.)

Enter Achilles” (second part)

lastly, this work, “Dead dreams of monochrome men“, which believe it or not, is from ‘89, is i think one the most interesting work that deals with male gay culture.

man, i love this stuff. and watching these works make me think of an ongoing conversation i’ve been having with Miss Abrams about how choreographic work relates to the dancers as humans or bodies. to generalize, Abrams comes from a place where she naturally relates to dancers as people, whereas i naturally relate to dancers as an instrument for abstract movements.

i find the “people” aspect of these works by DV8 absolutely captivating. they way they are so real and human is very much a starting point for the pieces it seems. it almost makes me think that i’m crazy for ever relating to a dancer’s body as anything else than a person.

anyway, just wanted to post these links. need to think more about this. much more!

poetry at noon

the LOC’s james madison building, where i was today

today i went to the library of congress for a lunchtime poetry reading. i’d done that once before, soon after moving to dc four years ago, and was mightily impressed then with living in such a cool city that famous poets would come and read their work for free! of course, i hadn’t been back since. but being able to go out at lunchtime, or whenever i want, is one of the major benefits of being on my own schedule, so finally i made it there once again.

this was a reading where folks read not their own poems but ones that they liked. it was quite lovely. i’ve realized that i’m a serious sucker for events focused around specific activities that one can concievably become expert in, like dance, meditation or poetry. i find the shared interest in something greater really brings people together and allows them to open up to each other quite quickly. i think that must be even stronger when the focus is art.

there’s something about poetry that’s often reminded me of modern dance; i think it’s the effort to capture something ineffable, some fleeting feeling or concept, in an art form that’s ephemeral and hard to grasp. ahh, i love art and i love poetry. all those sensitive souls in that room today, all those efforts to describe the difficulties, the sweetnesses and complications, of being alive. i am very much in a place right now where observations on experience are relevant, so the words and people really spoke to me. one of the poems brought me to tears, actually.

the last poem read was written by billy collins, a former US poet laureate, about poetry itself. it reminded me of how practitioners often talk about modern dance. it’s pretty lovely.

introduction to poetry

I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem’s room and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski across the surface of a poem waving at the author’s name on the shore.

But all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose to find out what it really means.
